A rigid cover, a flexible cover or thick board pages serve different purposes. Here's what to check before choosing a personalized book as a gift.

Choose hardcover if you want a rigid cover and prefer that feel for the gift. Choose softcover if you want a flexible cover and the edition fits your budget. Before deciding, check the inside pages. A hardcover picture book is different from a board book with thick pages.

For a personalized children's book, the cover is only part of the choice. You also want a story the family will enjoy reading and a clear view of what will arrive.

Start with how the book will be used

Picture an ordinary afternoon with the gift. Will a grown-up hold it while the child points at the pictures? Will it live at a grandparent's house? Is it intended as a keepsake to read together, or a book a baby will handle independently?

Those questions are more useful than assuming the most expensive edition is the right one.

What you wantWhat to check
A book for reading togetherRead the story preview and look at the amount of text on each page.
A rigid cover for a giftLook at the hardcover edition, including real photographs of the finished book.
A flexible cover within a smaller budgetCompare the softcover total, including shipping.
Thick pages for a baby to handleLook specifically for a board-book format and its stated age suitability.
A copy to keep at another relative's homeChoose the edition you can comfortably afford to leave there and use.

If you're unsure what the family needs, ask what kinds of books the child already enjoys. Our reading guide by age can help you think about the reading experience as well as the object.

What hardcover and softcover tell you

A hardcover has a rigid outer cover. A softcover, also called paperback, has a flexible one. Those labels describe the cover; they don't tell you everything about the paper or how the book opens.

Don't assume that hardcover means sewn binding, layflat pages or a particular paper thickness. Look for those details in the specific edition's description if they matter to you.

The printer QinPrinting distinguishes hardcover picture books from board books by their construction, including the pages. A book can have a strong outer cover and ordinary paper inside. The inside still needs care when turning pages.

A hardcover is not automatically a board book

Board books have thick board pages. A conventional hardcover picture book usually has paper pages inside its rigid cover.

If the gift is for a baby who will grab and mouth the book, check products explicitly made for that kind of handling. A personalized picture book might instead be a gift for a grown-up to hold and read with the child. You could give it alongside a board book, but you don't need to buy both.

Ask the parent which would be useful now. It is fine for a keepsake to be something they read together rather than something the baby handles alone.

Check the story before the binding

Open the preview and read more than the first page. Look for a subject the child likes and language that sounds natural when spoken aloud.

For a personalized book, check the child's name carefully. If the illustrations are personalized too, look through the whole story to see whether the character remains recognizable. Review the dedication separately, including accents, spelling and the name you sign with.

Look for photographs of a real printed copy as well as digital page previews. A page preview shows the words and pictures; a photograph helps you understand the object. Neither alone answers every question.

Compare the complete order

Use the final total for the destination address when comparing editions. Shipping can change how the options fit your budget.

If the book is for an occasion, check the delivery information before paying. Keep an estimated arrival date separate from a guaranteed one. Personalization, printing and shipping all need to be accounted for in the seller's estimate.

Also check what can be changed before printing and what the seller offers if the book arrives damaged. Those policies are worth reading before you spend time writing a dedication.

The two estori editions

estori offers a softcover and a hardcover printed book. Both are 8.5 by 8.5 inches with 24 pages, and you can add a dedication when ordering. They are picture books, not board books.

Check the current formats, prices and shipping information on the book page and in your order. Choose the cover you prefer for the family you're giving it to. The message you write inside belongs in either edition.
